The long version...links to part suppliers at the bottom
I read a glowing review of the HiVi 3" full range speaker at zaphaudio.com so I decided to try it. The speaker is very ineficient and only comes in an 8ohm version. I tried the box above with a small T-Amp and was not very happy with it. I got better results using the Keiga 2.1 amp and a subwoofer but the excursion on the small speakers was still alarming at moderately high volume levels.
I would recommend building a box that contains two of these speakers in parallel to drop the impedance to 4 ohms and move more air at low frequencies. Put a large coil on the bottom speaker to roll off the mids and highs and then run the top one full range or better yet, use an upper end crossover and add a small tweeter. I have 4 of these speakers laying around and will probably try that sometime and post the result.
